The Classical Persian Music workshop offers the Seattle community an opportunity to learn about the art of Classical Persian music and poetry from the world-renowned master of the ney (reed flute) and vocal repertoire, Ostad Hossein Omoumi, along with scholar and writer Dr. Fatemeh Keshavarz, and Jessika Kenney, vocalist. This four-day intensive will offer insight into the history and origins of this tradition, an introduction to classical Persian poetry, and the experience of singing the music. Topics of interest in the workshop include an introduction to the Dastgahs (the Persian melodic systems), issues of singing and translation, special vocal techniques, innovations on the form of the ney and tombak, and a special presentation on the poetry of Rumi. Private lessons can also be arranged.
The workshop is open to students ages 16 and up from all perspectives and at all levels. Students of Iranian heritage are encouraged to attend, as are those with little or no prior knowledge of Persian music. Professional musicians from other areas of music are also encouraged to attend.
